Too Attractive for the Job?

Too Attractive for the Job?

Forbes and The Huffington Post recently reported on a study out of BGU about how physical attractiveness impacts the job search.

The study by Dr. Bradley J. Ruffle of BGU’s Department of Economics and Dr. Zeev Shtudiner of Ariel University Center found that attractive women may have a harder time getting a job interview. That is if they include their photos in their job applications – a common practice in Israel and Europe.

The research included sending over 2,000 applications to employers in Israel, half with a photo and the other half with no photo. All the applicants had virtually equal credentials.

Their prediction: the more attractive applicants would receive the highest response rate. This was true for good looking male applicants. However, attractive female applicants were less likely to get called in for an interview than the female applicants with no photo.

The researchers are not certain why this occurred. However, with 93% of human resources staff in Israel being women, they suspect that there may be a jealousy bias.
