What the Sony Hack Reveals

January 16, 2015

Homeland & Cyber Security

The Sony hack has received considerable attention with discussions about how it was done, why, whom to blame, the trails which allegedly lead to North Korea, and the politics surrounding it. Dudu Mimran, chief technical officer of BGU’s Cyber Security Lab, has been following the story from the first report.

He says that the Sony story was different from previous cyber attacks for two main reasons.

First, the source of attack is allegedly originated and backed by a specific nation. Professionals can quite easily cover up their traces and definitely the attackers here are professionals.

Second, the results of the attack are devastating and the resulting publicity turned it into a nightmare for any CEO on earth; a warning sign to the free world.

According to Mimran, from a high level view it does not really matter whether the attack was from North Korea or not.

The possibility alone that a state attacked a private company without any consequences gives potential for this to happen again and again.
