BGU President Prof. Rivka Carmi has been chosen by the Beer-Sheva municipal council as an honored citizen for 2017.

The recognition is bestowed on inspiring residents for their contributions in education, culture and sports, research and academia, seeking to unite people and promoting tolerance, public activity and involvement on behalf of the city, the community and the state.

Prof. Carmi is the first woman to head a research university in Israel, and has served as BGU’s president since 2006. She works unceasingly to position BGU as a leading, innovative and groundbreaking university and has actively sought to promote the status of women in academia.

Currently, Prof. Carmi is leading BGU’s largest development project to date: the building of the University’s North Campus. This 57 acre addition will double the footprint of BGU in Beer-Sheva, allowing for a major increase in the number of students and for the building of additional classrooms, laboratories and dormitories.

This development will also strengthen the Advanced Technologies Park (ATP), of which BGU was a founding partner, as well as play a role in the IDF’s move to the Negev, particularly the intelligence and cyber units.

Prof. Carmi recently signed an agreement to create a joint entrepreneurship and innovation center with Jilin University, China’s largest university. Also during her tenure BGU received the largest ever donation to an Israeli institution: $400 million from the estate of Dr. Howard and Lottie Marcus, z’’l.

BGU Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Emeritus Ron Dagan, director of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Unit at Soroka University Medical Center, was selected alongside Prof. Carmi to receive the honored citizen recognition for his contributions to pediatric medicine.
