No Major Congenital Risk Posed for Using Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in the First Trimester of Pregnancy

BEER-SHEVA, ISRAEL, November 12, 2012 – Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) report in a new study that exposure to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which include ibuprofen, during the first trimester of pregnancy does not increase the risk for major congenital malformations.

The population-based retrospective cohort study, just published in The Journal of Rheumatology, included nearly 110,000 pregnancies.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are among the most common medicines used by pregnant women.

Use of ibuprofen in first trimester pregnancies increased sharply between 1998 and 2009; it was the most commonly dispensed NSAID during those years.

“The study investigated exposure to NSAID in the first trimester in a large cohort of infants and fetuses. Despite the steady increased use of NSAID among women in the first trimester of pregnancy there was no association found between groups of malformations according to organ systems,” says BGU researcher Amalia Levy M.P.H., Ph.D., Department of Epidemiology and Health Services Evaluation, Faculty of Health Sciences.
