Medical Research, Natural Sciences

Dr. Raz Zarivach is a great example of the promising young researchers who choose to pursue their careers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Dr. Zarivach, a structural biologist, came to BGU a few years ago to start a macromolecular crystallography lab that is affiliated with the National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev (NIBN). He is also a senior lecturer in BGU’s Department of Life Sciences.

raz-zarivach-300His lab focuses on the 3D structure of proteins and how to build molecules and antibiotics to cure different diseases.

“One of the main challenges of starting a lab is not the science part as much as accepting the role of being a mentor,” says Dr. Zarivach.

Dr. Zarivach was recently selected as a EMBO Young Investigator, a European program that recognizes the best young group leaders in the field of life sciences.

During his three-year tenure in the Young Investigator program, Dr. Zarivach will receive a range of financial and practical benefits designed to help him realize his potential as a world-class researcher.

As a young researcher, he prides himself in being able to combine science with family life. “You can finish your day at 5 p.m. if you are very efficient,” he says.

He is also one of three BGU researchers who were invited to participate in the 63rd Annual Lindau Laureate Meeting in Lindau, Germany, where he got the opportunity to meet 34 Nobel Lauerates and bring his gained knowledge back to his lab at BGU.
