Prof. Eli Lewis, Ph.D. is breaking new ground in seeking a cure for type 1 diabetes. As the Ilse Katz Career Development Chair in Health Sciences Research at BGU, Prof. Lewis’s work focuses on improving the survival and function of insulin-producing cells in people with diabetes. He and his team recently discovered a common, easily accessible drug that can protect the cells, which reverses diabetes and restores glucose control in animal models. Three clinical trials with people with diabetes have recently been completed. This profound discovery has now been extended to allow successful pancreatic islet cell transplants from animals to benefit people with type 1 diabetes. Prof. Lewis has been awarded prestigious research grants by several foundations, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the Israel Science Foundation.
