Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has an ongoing commitment to the diagnosis and treatment of autism. The University, in cooperation with Soroka University Medical Center, established the Negev Autism Center, the first center in Israel that combines community and clinical care with research in the same location. The center aims to translate scientific discoveries into treatments and tools to improve quality of life for children with autism.

Dr. Alal Eran, a member of BGU’s Center for Evolutionary Genomics and Medicine and Department of Life Sciences, is a computational biologist studying the molecular basis of autism with the goal of enabling earlier diagnosis and more personalized care. Her research focuses on the clinical and molecular complexity of neurodevelopmental disorders, and deciphering their underlying gene-environment interactions by integrating large datasets of functional genomic measurements and clinical information. Dr. Eran studies RNA-mediated regulation at the synapse of children with autism as compared to neurotypical individuals, using deep sequencing of RNA and DNA.
