Dr. Eliezer (Eli) Papo teaches oral Jewish literature, Jewish folklore and Sephardic culture and literature at BGU. His book, And Thou Shall Jest With Your Son: Judeo-Spanish Parodies on the Passover Haggadah, received the prestigious Ben-Tzvi award. Born and raised in Sarajevo, he holds a B.A. in law from the University of Sarajevo, a degree in rabbinics from the Midrash Sepharadi in Jerusalem, an M.A. in Jewish languages and literature from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a Ph.D. in Hebrew literature from BGU. Since 1997, Dr. Papo has served as the non-residential rabbi for the Jewish community of Bosnia and Herzegovina/Sarajevo.
