Prof. Irwin Cotler is a Canadian member of parliament and former minister of justice and attorney general. He is a world-renowned international human rights lawyer and has served as counsel to prisoners of conscience including Andrei Sakharov, Natan Sharansky and Nelson Mandela. Cotler received an honorary doctoral degree from BGU in 2016 in recognition of his legislative efforts in aid of the struggle against racism and hate, and transforming the Canadian judicial system into an exemplar of equality.
