It turns out that the Zionist quote from Theodor Herzl “If you will it, it is no dream” could also apply to women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

A recent study from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has found that stress management therapy, including visualization techniques for relaxation, significantly helped women’s chances of getting pregnant through IVF.

“Many women undergoing IVF convince themselves they can’t become pregnant as a defense mechanism,” says BGU researcher Jo Czamanski-Cohen.

In the study of Israeli women trying to get pregnant through IVF, 88 percent of those who took part in a cognitive behavioral therapy program became pregnant, compared to 60 percent who did not participate in the therapy.

The therapy sessions involved breathing exercises, muscle relaxation and guided imagery techniques such as imagining being in a relaxing place.
