Turning personal heartbreak into a positive force, a doctor from Gaza has started the Daughters for Life Foundation, a fund to further female scholarship in the Middle East, including Israel.

During the 2009 Israeli-Gaza war, Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaisch, a peace-promoting obstetrician working in Israel, was in his Gaza home when a shell landed on the house killing three of his daughters — Bessan, Mayar and Aya.

Now living and teaching public health in Toronto, Dr. Abuelaisch has created this scholarship fund in memory of his daughters. In total, some 35 awards will be granted to female students in countries across the region including Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, the Palestinian Territories and Israel.

Among the recipients from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev are Amalya Ze’evi from Holon, studying politics and society; Ma’ayan Givoni, from Ramat Yishai, working on product innovation in business; and second-year medical student Safa Abu Hani from the Bedouin village of Rahat.

Abuelaisch’s connection to BGU goes back to his first medical fellowship which was at Soroka Medical Cetner in Beer-Sheva, the teaching hospital for BGU.
