Students from BGU’s Department of Mechanical Engineering recently participated in the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) race in Italy. This four-day competition challenges students from around the world to conceive, design, fabricate and compete with one-seater Formula-style autocross racers.

It’s only the second year that the team from BGU, known as BG Racing, took part in this competition and the team placed 11th overall.

“We’re talking about teams that have been competing in this tournament more than 15 years, so having our second car achieve spectacular results is amazing,” says Ben Levitan, BG Racing’s team captain.

The cars were judged on four different criteria including performance, engineering excellence and general appearance.

One of the “secrets” to the team’s success this year is that the students from BGU worked in cooperation with students from Jerusalem’s Betzalel Academy for the Arts on the design of the car.

“Bezalel gave us a wonderful opportunity to have a car that was designed properly, and in my opinion our car was one of the best-looking cars in the competition,” says Levitan.
