Ben-Gurion University of the Negev’s (BGU) Department of Hotel and Tourism Management has been ranked 6th in tourism research according to a study by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research.

The department, which is part of the Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management, was ranked 11th worldwide in the combined fields of hospitality and tourism research.

The Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research reviewed scholarly articles published in other hospitality and tourism journals from 2000 to 2009.  According to the findings, BGU came in sixth out of 50 in tourism research and 11th out of 50 when hospitality and tourism research were considered together.

In addition, four researchers from the department made the top 100 list: Prof. Arie ReichelProf. Yaniv PoriaProf. Natan Uriely and Prof. Aviad Israeli, chair of the department.

According to Prof. Israeli, “Tourism and hospitality are important elements in the field of business and management research because they focus on the unique aspects of service industries. The ranking of our department as one of the best in its class is a well-deserved recognition of our commitment to high quality academic research.”

This academic research also carries significant practical implications which are evident from the department’s contribution to the development of quality management in Israel’s tourism and hospitality industry.

BGU hotel and tourism courses are taught in both BGU’s Marcus Family Campus in Beer-Sheva and its campus in Eilat. Each summer for the past 10 years, approximately 10 students are sent to New York City hotels as interns.
